The Blind Leading The Blind

What exactly does that mean, anyway?  Apparently it means people in management or authority that have no vision, leading people who have no vision.  Wow.  That is a lost cause, don’t you think? Nobody taking responsibility is a recipe for disaster.

Leaders without vision are by definition handicapped.  How can someone that has no vision for the future lead the people?  If they don’t know where they are going, what difference does it make where they end up?

This is a two-fold problem.  First, you have leaders with no vision.  How can a leader stay in a leadership role without a vision of where they want to go?  They will not last long.  The people will revolt and throw the person out at some point.  It may take a while for the people to realize that he has no vision because he may be very compelling and charismatic. But, eventually the truth will come out and he will be revealed for what he is or what he is not.

The second problem is that the people need to put on some glasses and pay attention.  They have a responsibility to see for themselves.   Why do people just trust someone in authority or leadership blindly?  We see this every election, regardless of what party you support. That is naïve, ignorant, and problematic. If you have someone in authority over you, don’t be a sheep that just follows along with the crowd.  I am not suggesting you revolt or disobey the law or what you know you are supposed to do.  I am suggesting you think for yourself and question something that is apparently wrong.

Principle 1.  If you are a leader or in authority, cast a vision for the people.  Without vision, the people perish.

Principle 2.  If you have someone in authority over you, don’t check your brain at the door.  You still have a responsibility to make sure that what you are doing is legal, moral, ethical, and in the best interests of everyone….including the customer. In fact, it needs to be in the customer’s best interests first and foremost.

How great would this world be if we had leaders who lead with vision and conviction, and the people following held them accountable by questioning things that were not right?  This is the way we should be living.

It is a mutual accountability.  We all have a responsibility to do our part, whether we are in leadership or even if we are just part of the crew.  My hope is that you do your part to make this a better world.

Shalom!
